I won’t lie, I thoroughly enjoyed and fascinated by the big battle sequence in the third act. It was unexpected and done very well, for a fairy tale movie. The star of the movie, of course, is Angelina Jolie’s Maleficent. The movie deflated whenever she was off screen. Although she did not have a lot of dialogues in this movie, her presence and “eye expressions” was enough to charge up the screen. Coming from a non-Angelina fan, this is high complement. Michelle Pfeiffer did a terrific job as the opponent to Maleficent. You need a good villain in every movie and she more than fit the bill in this one. The special effects looked quite fake at the beginning (especially in 3D) but somehow it got better halfway through. Or maybe I get used to the cotton candy spectacles and resorted to just go along with the ride. All in all, it’s an entertaining through predictable 2 hours cinematic thrill ride.
